The Deathzone

Many years ago, I created some Doom 2 levels, and bundled them all together to make a series. There were seven levels in total, and I had started work on the final eighth level, but never finished it. The levels had varying designs, but were all multi-player maps. I also added some new textures, and ripped some music from Heretic, and one or two publically available MIDI files.

Although I was never an amazing level designer, I was really happy with a few of these levels. In fact one of the levels was modeled on my old English Secondary school (The Cavendish School) in Hemel Hempstead (In the game it is level four - 'The Power Complex'). It was an outdoors level, and I think at the time it may have been the biggest open level available as an add-on to Doom 2. One of the other levels (I think it was Level 6 - The Fortress) was based on a floor plan out of the TSR Star Frontiers Game. My favorite levels were: Level 4 - Power Complex, and Level 7 - Space Lab. Level 5 - Deliverance, was the first level I had ever designed (and it shows). Level 2 - The Haunted Mansion was the second level I ever designed, and I think you can see that I had improved somewhat. The last level I completed was Level 7 - Space Lab. Level 3 which I called 'The Chase' was my attempt at replicating and improving on one of my favorite levels called The Island from The Last Resort series. I think theirs was better, and I don't think the level ever really came together. All of the levels that I had completed were uploaded as a series under the title 'The Deathzone' to the Internet and made generally available to everyone sometime late in 1995 I think. Because the eighth level had never been completed, the series didn't really work. They disappeared a couple of years later, when the Doom 2 Mod scene had completely died.

All of these levels were designed and built using DEU, DEUTEX and DEUTEX2. The binary space tree was built using IDBSP. I originally created some LMP Demo files for each of the levels, but never provided them with the WADS. I'm not sure why not. I think I did merge in some LMPs to the actual Level WAD, so it replaced the original demos.

The following files are available for download:

The Deathzone README.TXT File.

The Deathzone instructions and level descriptions.

The Deathzone levels WAD File (Required to play).

The Deathzone graphics and textures WAD File (Required for the game to look right).

The Deathzone music WAD File (Not required to play, but atmospheric for the levels).
